2015-2016 Course Syllabus
English I College Prep
Mrs. Sabala
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course fulfills the freshman English requirement. It provides an introduction to basic literary forms – the short story, the novel, poetry, and drama. Specific attention is given to the improvement of reading, thinking, and discussion skills in connection with required reading. The writing process is reviewed as it applies to argument, analysis, description, and explanation. The student will also be required to complete outside reading and research as well as participate in the summer reading program.
GRADING SCALE: ALL Linden High School Language Arts teachers will use the following scale to establish your grade:
Tests/Projects/Essays 40%
Classwork/Participation 25%
Quizzes 20%
Homework 15%
Tests/Quizzes: Both standardized and teacher-generated tests and quizzes will typically be announced. However, if it is apparent that students are not doing the reading, I will assign a pop quiz. Pop quizzes are typically open note. In other words, do the reading, take notes, and there won’t be any surprises. J
Projects/Essays: Students will be required to write several essays throughout the course of the year varying in length from 5 paragraphs to 2-3 pages. There will also be group projects, which will be assigned over the course of the year. Projects and Essays are to be submitted ON THE DUE DATE. You will lose a FULL LETTER GRADE each day it is late. If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from submitting work on time please come see me!
Classwork and Participation: Because participation is 25% of your overall grade, it can mean the difference between an A or B. In addition to contributing to class discussion, participation also means, completing the weekly Agenda and “Do-Now,” completing reading assignments, responding on MyBigCampus, and cooperating in groups or pairs. It is expected you are on time to class. Being on time and prepared for class with completed homework is considered part of your participation grade.
Homework Policy: All students are expected to complete homework assignments on time. Each homework assignment will count as one stamp on your Weekly Agenda sheet. Weekly Agendas are to be handed about every 2 weeks. Homework will be accepted ONE day late for HALF credit. Please subscribe to Remind alerts to stay updated with Homework reminders.
Materials: For this course you will need your MacBook Air and a 2- pocket folder to keep Agenda sheets and graded assignments.
*A NOTE ON READING: All students will be asked to read a substantial amount this year. We will read in class as a large group, in small groups, and independently. You are also expected to read on your own time. I am a big fan of Audio books! You are free to listen to audio books via Youtube, Librivox.org, and sometimes I will upload them to our class website.
